Term 2
My goal is to move from level 3P to 3A in writing
Week2
I wrote a recount about the Hydro-slide at the lagoon pools at Auckland and achieved a 3A! Yahoo! Goal achieved!
Week4
I wrote a recount about the motat aviation hall and achieved a 4B! Even better!
Week6
I wrote a unassisted recount and achieved a 4B. Also, for my report I achieved a 3A. Here is the link to my report. My Report (in blendspace)
Week8
For my exposition speech about graffiti parks I achieved a 3A. ^-----My speech.
Term3
My goal for term3 is to achieve 4B in all forms of writing.
Week2
I achieved 21/21 in a language feature test.
Week4
I wrote about a pigeon's flight and obtained a 4B. I used lots of imagery.
Week6
I wrote about my violin teacher droning on about random topics. My recount fits the success criteria.
Week8
My unassisted recount scored a 4B. It was about me listening to an concert.

Hello

My name is Michael and I am a year 5.

Levels
The levels are like this:
1A 1B 1A 2B 2P 2A 3P 3A 4B 4P 4A ... and so on.
Occasionally I get a reading age and a stage for maths. The expected level for end of yr5 is 3P.
Maths
I do yr 10 maths in a special group. In term 2, I gained a 5A in a statistics test.
In term 4, we have started learning about angles.
We also learnt about the Pythagoras theorem and the trigonometric ratios and about sine, cosine, tangent and theta.

Multiplication strategies

  1. Doubling and halving ( proportional adjustment )
Solve 24×6
Solution:
To use the strategy, you have to halve one number and double another so you get the same answer as the original equation. Applying this to the equation , you halve 24 to get 12 and double 6 to get 12. Now we can rewrite the equation as 12×12 which has an answer of 144.

2. Rounding and Compensating
Solve 24 ×18
Solution:.
To use the strategy, you have to one number up or down and then compensate. In this problem, because 18 is very close to 20 so we will round it up. 24 times 20 is 480. Next we will compensate by multiplying 20-18 with 24 which is 48.480-48 is 432 so the answer is 432.

3.Place value
Solve 56 × 12
Solution:
To use this strategy , split a number into tens and multiply with the other number. Applying the rule, split 56 into 50 and 6. Then multiply 50 by 12 to get 600 and multiply 6 by 12 to get 72. Add 600 with 72 to get 672.

4.Distribution rule
Solve 5×99+5.
Solution:
With the distribution rule, a specific type of number sentence can have 2 forms: the expanded and simplified forms. For example: the expanded form of 5×(5+1) is 5×5+5×1. Applying the rule, you make 5x99+5 into 5x99+5x1 and simplify into 5x(99+1)=5x100=500.
Reading
In term 2, I gained a 6B in my reading test.

Science
This term (term 4) we have been learning about forces. We have explored friction and natural forces.

Home work
This term (term 4) we have been using the kiwikids news site for homework. Take a look at kiwikids news!
